MARK & LAURA KOOPMANS

Mark and Laura are sheep and beef farmers running Hawkhills, which they’ve been farming for the past 12 years on the Inland Road in Kaikōura.

Over that time, they have gradually carved out their own path as they moved away from traditional practices and into a more regenerative way of farming. What began as a desire to break old habits has grown into a genuine passion for working with their environment, building a farm system that is resilient, enjoyable, and true to their values.

Their journey has been shaped by plenty of learning curves and “ah-hah” moments, especially as they navigate financial pressures and the challenge of creating a low-input, viable system that suits their land and sustains their lifestyle.

Hawkhills continues to evolve every year as they adapt, tweak, and rethink what they do. They don’t claim to have a perfect formula or a set system—just a willingness to learn, experiment, and improve. And while they’re not out to convince anyone to farm the same way, they’re always open to sharing what has and hasn’t worked for them with those who are curious.

Passionate about farming, good food, and leaving the land in a better state for future generations, Mark and Laura take a value-driven, regenerative approach centred on continual learning and adaptation.
